Eckenbrecher, Themistokles von
1842 Athens - 1921 Goslar.
Horse-drawn sleigh ride on an icy winter day.
Watercolour and opaque white on brownish paper. Monogrammed lower right and dated 1859.
H 19, W.
The early work from Eckenbrecher, when he was just 16 or 17 years old, already shows his existing talent before he had even enjoyed an academic education. His father was a man of the world and Themistokles often accompanied him on his travels. At an early age, he told his parents that he wanted to become a marine and landscape painter. The young artist quickly developed a passion for sailing ships, which he made a recurring motif in his works. He would perfect the subtle light moods and balanced compositions evident in his early work later with his private teacher Oswald Achenbach (1827 - 1905) at the Düsseldorf School of Painting between 1861 and 1863.
